Where are you starting from?

A home that has never had it

The bedroom holds the day's heat until 2 a.m., and every open window lets in the street. See how single-split, multi-split and ducted systems compare, and what approval an outdoor unit needs.

It rattles, it struggles in August, and the bills keep climbing. See when replacing makes more sense than another repair, and what a good quote should include.

What makes the Riviera different

Three local realities shape most jobs on this coast. Raise them early, and you are less likely to get a surprise in June.

You probably share the building

Many flats are in a copropriété (a co-owned building). If an outdoor unit is mounted on a common part or changes the building's appearance, the owners' general meeting must usually approve it, so start well before summer.

The street may be protected

In France, changing the look of a building can require a declaration to the town hall. In protected areas, the Architecte des Bâtiments de France also has a say, which can limit where a unit goes. Monaco has its own rules.

The sea is hard on metal

Outdoor units close to the water are exposed to salt air. Ask whether the unit has a protected coil and what servicing the warranty requires.

How a quote request works

  1. Describe the property

Town, type of property, rooms to cool and anything already installed. Two minutes is enough.

  2. Hear from an installer

A qualified local installer contacts you to discuss the job and arrange a survey if one is needed.

  3. Compare and decide

Your quote sets out the price and terms, so read it closely before you sign.

Common questions

Who carries out the work?

A qualified local installer carries out the work. Your quote sets out who does what, the price and the terms.

Do I need permission for an outdoor unit in a flat?

Usually, if it is mounted on a façade, roof or other common part of a copropriété, or changes the building's appearance. Ask your managing agent (syndic). A planning declaration to the town hall may also be needed. In Monaco, ask your building manager.

Can a system heat as well as cool?

Yes. Reversible air conditioning systems are air-to-air heat pumps, so they can also provide heating in winter.
